Plastic Elliptic Boning 3.2mm x 2.25mm - By the Yard

Our Plastic Elliptic Boning - 3.2mm x 2.25mm is a premium European-made plastic boning, also known as synthetic whalebone or plastic whalebone. Unlike the flat profile of our German Plastic Boning, this boning has an elliptic (oval) cross-section that allows it to flex in multiple directions rather than a single plane. This makes it an excellent choice for curved seams, shaped bodice panels, and anywhere a more supple, body-conforming structure is needed. Slightly more flexible than our flat German Plastic Boning, it delivers soft but reliable support without stiffness.

This boning can be cut with sturdy scissors and the cut edge finished with a nail file - no specialty tools required. It is safe to dry clean or machine wash; air dry only.

    Features

    • Dimensions: 3.2mm wide x 2.25mm thick, elliptic (oval) cross-section profile
    • Material: Polyacetal plastic - OEKO TEX Standard 100 certified, no toxic material components
    • Multi-directional flex - bends in more than one plane, unlike flat plastic boning
    • Slightly more flexible than our German Plastic Boning
    • Lighter weight than steel boning
    • Smooth finish - will not snag fabric or linings
    • Can be cut with sturdy scissors; finish cut edges with a nail file
    • No bone tips required
    • Does not require separate bone casing - sew through directly or create a sewn channel in your garment layers
    • Safe to dry clean or machine wash - air dry only
    • Sold by the yard
    • Made in Europe
    • See the Technical Specs section below for additional dimensions and details

    Usage & Application

    • Cut to length with sturdy scissors and smooth any cut edge with a nail file before use - no bone tips required
    • Insert into underwire channeling for a flexible, multi-directional alternative to traditional underwire
    • Encase in any seam allowance to add structure along a seam line without adding a separate channel
    • Use with a piping foot and zig-zag stitch to secure alongside fabric edges
    • Sew a bias strip to a hem edge and insert the boning to create a shaped or wavy decorative hem
    • Use in curved or shaped seams where flat boning would resist the curve or create distortion
    • Ideal for corset top lines, sweetheart necklines, and bust-shaping seams where gentle multi-directional support is needed without rigid structure
    • Well suited to bra side panels, bikini tops, and lingerie where soft, flexible support is needed and steel is impractical

Pro Tip: The multi-directional flex of elliptic boning makes it particularly useful at the top edge of a corset or structured bodice. Placed just inside the binding, a short length helps the neckline hold its shape and lie flat against the body without the rigidity of a full-width flat bone. Use a piping foot and zig-zag stitch to secure it alongside the fabric edge - do not attempt to stitch through it, as the needle will deflect the boning or break.

Pro Tip #2: For a shaped or ruffled hem on a fascinator, costume accessory, or decorative edge, sew a bias strip along the hem and insert a length of elliptic boning before closing. The boning holds the curve without stiffening the fabric, giving a controlled wave rather than a flat or limp edge.

    Recommended Uses

    • Great For: Corset and bodice top lines, sweetheart necklines, and shaped bust seams requiring gentle multi-directional support
    • Great For: Bra side panels, bikini tops, and lingerie where soft flexible structure is needed without the weight of steel
    • Great For: Bustiers, basques, and structured gowns requiring shape retention without heavy stiffness
    • Great For: Curved seams and shaped panels where flat boning would distort the line
    • Great For: Garments requiring washable boning - safe to launder, air dry only
    • Great For: Costumes and theatrical builds where lightweight, flexible structure is preferred over steel
    • Also Works For: Millinery, collars, cuffs, and any application requiring a narrow flexible bone that follows a curve

Flexible support that follows the body: Our Plastic Elliptic Boning brings multi-directional flex and soft structure to garments where flat boning falls short - from curved corset seams and necklines to lingerie panels and shaped bodices.

Also available: Plastic Elliptic Boning - 1.8mm x 1.5mm for an even finer, more delicate profile.
